VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES
As most of you know, Langley Baseball is run by volunteers. It truly takes a small army to pull off a successful fun season of baseball.
Langley Baseball requires all families of registered athletes to complete volunteer time per season. A volunteer deposit cheque is required at the beginning of the season in the amount of $200.00.
Volunteer time will be monitored and recorded by the Volunteer Coordinator.
The Team Parent for each team will assign tasks (such as field set up/take down, scorekeeping, pitch count and concession). Each family is responsible to complete these duties during our season order to fulfil their volunteer time. If you are unable to complete a task for medical reasons, please ensure you advise your Team Parent who can set you up with alternate duties. Please notify your team parent if you need to schedule your duties for a different day.
Volunteer cheques will be cashed at the end of the season if volunteer time is not fulfilled.
If you have any questions, please contact the Volunteer Coordinator at volunteers@langleybaseball.ca.
What are some volunteer duties available?
Field Maintenance:
Field maintenance is essential to keep our fields to the high standard our players deserve.
It involves moderate and physical maintenance work like shoveling, wedding, pressure washing, painting, raking etc.
This usually occurs prior to the beginning of the season to prep our fields for the season.
Scorekeeping:
Each team is responsible for their own scorekeeping in the 7+ divisions. This is a great way to help and get in your volunteer hours.
Scorekeeping in baseball is a bit more involved than other sports and has a bit more of a learning curve.
The following link is a playlist on youtube that will help you become familiar on how to scorekeep.
Concession Duties:
It has been the responsibility of the home team at a game, to provide 2 adults to run their side of the concession for the duration of the game. This includes managing the sales of concession items, opening and closing the concession.
Scorekeeping Tutorial
This is also a great way for a high school student (with adult supervision) to obtain volunteer hours. We will gladly issue a certificate for completion of volunteer hours.
Maintenance Work:
Parents and families who have specialized skills are needed from time to time for maintenance work on things around the park.
This could include electrical work, drywall work, cleaning, etc. Whether a hobby or by trade, we are always in need of handy people to make our league a success.
Please reach out to offer your services, the league would greatly appreciate it!
Tournaments:
Tournaments at Langley Baseball cannot run smoothly without the help of volunteers.
We are always looking for individuals who would be interested in announcing names of players and teams, as well as individuals to help with the concession. The usual duties will also apply such as field set up and take down, scorekeeping and pitch count.
Photo Day:
We are always in need of parents or family members to help ensure that our photo day runs smoothly and efficiently.
This involves checking in teams and players as they arrive and guiding them to where their team is meeting prior to their photos.
Cancellation notice and procedures
Volunteers MUST provide a minimum of 24 hours cancellation notice once signed up for a volunteer activity. Failure to provide 24 hours notice will result in the volunteer deposit being cashed by the league.
If you need to cancel your volunteer assignment, please remove your name from the sign up website and advise the Volunteer Coordinator immediately.
Rain outs are out of our control and our Volunteer Coordinator will do everything they can to advise you as soon as possible. Please be sure to follow Langley Baseball on social media as rain outs are posted there. Occasionally the rain outs are close to, or during games and the Volunteer Coordinator isn't able to provide proper notice. We realize this can be inconvenient for all volunteers including scheduled coaches. We rely on volunteers, therefore if your volunteer hours get cancelled dur to weather, you will be credited for the hours worked and the remaining will be rescheduled.
